Ackerman Tied For Lead; Men's Golf Tied for Fifth After First Round Of The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif. – Competing against 13 of the top-50 teams in the country, Santa Clara men's golf completed the first round of the 27-team The Goodwin in a tie for fifth-place after carding a 287 team score.

The Broncos are ahead of powerhouse programs No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 14 Pepperdine and No. 18 SMU among others with 36 holes left to be played. Washington holds the first-round lead at 278 with No. 31 and tournament host Stanford one shot back. They are the only teams to score under par on the 6,758-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course layout.

"Plus-7 and in the top-5 is a good place to be in," head coach Rob Miller said. "We're happy with the start. We struggled at the start of our past tournaments, so we'll take it."

The Broncos were paced by Derek Ackerman, who took a share of the first-round lead into the clubhouse after his 67. He was the front-runner at 6-under thru 14 holes, but a bogey on his 14th hole (No. 6) and a double bogey on the final stop dropped him into a tie.

"Heck of a day for Derek," Miller said. "A double (bogey) on the last hole left a bad taste in his mouth. But he had a fantastic round. He's very familiar with this course and feels comfortable playing here."

Ackerman is tied with Colorado's Daniel O'Loughlin and Stanford's David Snyder at 3-under with a host of players just a few shots off the pace.

Junior Matt McCarty carded a 1-over 71 to tie for 25th with 11 other players.

"Matt scrounged out a 1-over and he's looking to improve his score in the second-round," Miller said about his No. 1 player.

Konrad Brauckmeyer shot a 74, which was one swing better than teammate Jack Avrit and two shots better then Berk Harvey, who ended the day with a 78.

"The guys feel they can perform better on this course," Miller added. "We'll find out tomorrow. Overall it was a good start for us."

The Broncos will tee off in the late wave for Friday's second round, getting started around Noon. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
