SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A pair clutch goals helped Santa Clara men's water polo survive in its sixth game during the last four days.
Mac Carey matched his career high with four goals, including the tying strike at the end of regulation, and DeMarco Orella scored the game-winner in the second overtime of the Broncos' 12-11 victory over George Washington on Monday evening.
After squandering a three-goal third quarter lead, Santa Clara (10-11) needed some heroics and Carey came through when the Colonials (10-9) took an 11-10 lead with 28 seconds left in regulation on a goal by Jack Kerwin.
Following a Santa Clara timeout, goalie Matt Taylor turned aside Carey's first attempt before the freshman lefty took a feed from Ryan Werner and powered the ball into the back of the net, sending the game to extra time.
Carey also had a hand in the winning goal. Reilley May's steal helped set up the final tally of the game. On the ensuing possession, Carey found Orella who rifled a shot past Taylor with 1:40 left in the second three-minute overtime.
The Broncos forced a turnover on the next GWU possession. The Colonials had one final chance, but were unable to score on their final two attempts in the closing seconds as Patrick Collins turned aside Kerwin's shot with time running out.
Collins made 11 saves in a game that featured 28 ejections and four yellow cards. The freshman was thrust into the starting role the last six games due to injury and had his second-straight double-digit save outing.
"It was the end of a long weekend of games and it got a little chippy, but I'm glad we were able to come away with the win," Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It was a good experience to be able to win our first overtime game of the season. Mac and DeMarco came up with some huge goals for us."
The Broncos played host to the annual Rodeo Tournament the last four days with 18 games played between Friday and Sunday at Sullivan Aquatic Center.
The Colonials, who were 4-for-8 with the man advantage, were playing their sixth game since Thursday.
Pierce Deamer scored a game-high five goals to lead the offensive attack for George Washington, which lost its third straight. Taylor was credited with 14 saves.
May and Will Grant had two goals apiece for the Broncos who have won four of the last five games
George Washington was one of eight schools that made the coast-to-coast trip for the Rodeo Tournament.
The Broncos head back into Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) action Friday when they travel to play Cal Baptist.
