Women’s Golf Takes Seventh At Nittany Lion Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – Santa Clara women's golf scored its best round of the 54-hole Nittany Lion Invitational with a final-round 296, ending the event in seventh-place among the 16-team field with a 903 (+39) total.

Following their first-round 310, which left them in 11th place, the Broncos responded with a second-round 297 to climb four spots up the leaderboad into seventh. Today's 296 gave them separation from the teams below them, however they couldn't climb further finishing 9-strokes out of a top-5 finish.

"Our ball-striking was very good in the second and third rounds," head coach Krystal Kelly noted. "The course played long in Round 1 and the wind was opposite of the practice round. We were process and target-oriented over the last 36 holes. I'm very proud of the number we posted today. I think this was a great way to get the season started."

Host Penn State won the team title over Washington in a scorecard tie-breaker. Both squads ended 54-holes at 864.

Sophomore Emily Sumner was Santa Clara's top individual finisher. Her final-round 1-over 73 put her in a tie for 21st with a 7-over 223 total. Junior Marni Murez carded a final-round even-par 72 to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard to claim a share of 23rd place at 8-over 224.

Sarah Busey tied for 31st with a 226 total (76-73-77). Freshman Claire Choi carded a final-round 2-over 74 and improved her scores over each round. She ended at 16-over 232 (81-77-74) to tie for 55th. Chloe Wong's final-round 78 gave her a total of 234.

Penn State's Sarah Willis won individual medalist honors with a tournament record 11-under 205.

The Broncos return to action on Sept. 29 competing in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
