Battle at the Rock Suspended By Darkness; Women’s Golf to Resume Play Tuesday Morning

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The danger of playing 16-team tournaments in mid-February is that darkness will creep up on the field. And that's exactly what happened at the Battle at the Rock. Second-round play was suspended when players could no longer see, leaving second-round action to resume Tuesday morning in advance of the final round.

Adding to the dilemma was morning frost, which delayed the start of Monday's first-round for two hours. When play got underway, Santa Clara women's golf shot a 6-over 294 across the opening 18 holes to place third.

The field was able to complete about three-fourths of the second round until conditions were unplayable. All statistics from the second 18 holes are unofficial until the round is completed.

The Broncos were led in the opening round by junior Marni Murez, who carded a 1-under 71 on Monday morning. Sophomore Emily Sumner scored a 1-over 73 and freshman Claire Choi was a shot back of her teammate at 2-over 74.

Sarah Busey (76) and Chloe Wong (78) rounded out Santa Clara's contingent.

The field will hit the course Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. to complete the second round. Final round play will begin immediately after on the 6,046-yard, par-72 Oak Quarry Golf Club layout. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
