Choi Grabs Top-5; Women’s Golf Ties For 11th At The Gold Rush

SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Bolstered by the play of freshman Claire Choi, who earned her first career top-5, Santa Clara women's golf rallied in the final round to claim a share of 11th-place at The Gold Rush with a 905 total.

With Choi firing a career-low round of 1-under 71 on Tuesday, the Broncos compiled their lowest score of the tournament with a final-round 299. They ended with a 905 total to match Minnesota in the 11th position, well off the pace of champion No. 36 San Jose State, which led wire-to-wire and finished three-swings better than No. 38 Georgia at 873.

For the Broncos it was all about their first-year player. Choi established a personal-best with a 72 in the opening round and bettered that by a shot in the third round, ending the tournament with a career-low 54-hole score of even-par 216 for a solo fifth.

"Claire played great!" head coach Krystal Kelly said. "I'm very proud of her."

Choi ranked second in the 82-player field with 13 birdies and in par-3 scoring. She finished two-shots behind co-medalists Abegail Arevalo and Natasha Andrea Oon of San Jose State.

Sophomore Emily Sumner climbed 10 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 33rd with her final-round 1-over 73. She ended at 10-over 226, one-swing better than teammate Sarah Busey, who grabbed a share of 39th with her 227 total.

Juniors Chloe Wong and Marni Murez both carded a final-round 80 impacting the team score. Wong totaled 236 and Murez 250 for the three-round event.

"This was definitely not our best," Kelly added. "But we know what we need to work on for BYU."

The Broncos return to action on March 11 at the BYU Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah.
