Blistering Second Round Puts Women’s Golf In Fifth After 36 Holes Of Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf carded the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history with a second-round 5-under 283, climbing six spots up the leaderboard to finish the first day of the Fresno State Classic in fifth-place with a 586 total.

The Broncos found themselves in the bottom half of the 14-team field after a first-round 303, but they rallied behind sophomores Sarah Busey, Emily Sumner and freshman Claire Choi, who all scored below par over the second 18 holes.

Santa Clara's second-round score was bettered only by UC Davis, which scored a 281 in the afternoon to grab an 8-shot lead over Grand Canyon after 36-holes.

"The second round was really fun to watch," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "We hit more fairways in the second round and scored a lot of birdies. I'm really proud of them for bouncing back after that first round."

Busey matched her career-low round of 69 after an opening 76, moving up 29 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 10th. Sumner carded a 2-under 70, joining her teammate and six other golfers at 1-over 145.

Choi signed a second-round 1-under 71 to grab a share of 18th at 2-over 146. She topped the field with 29 pars.

"Sarah, Emily and Claire played really well," Kelly noted.

In her return to the lineup, Marni Murez contributed a 1-over 73 to the second round success. The junior skipped the Broncos previous event and showed some rust with a first-round 77. She climbed into a tie for 34th at 6-over 150.

Freshman Duong Tran completed 36 holes with a 159 (79-80) total, matching teammate and fellow first-year player Naomi Wong, who's competing as an individual in her first collegiate event. Also competing as an individual, Isabella Seeburger scored rounds of 76 and 79.

Christine Danielson of UC Davis took the clubhouse lead by one shot over a trio of golfers at 4-under 140.

The field will play a single 18-hole final round on Tuesday with a shotgun start slated for 8:45 a.m. PT. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
