SPOKANE, Wash. – Sophomore Sarah Busey carded a 2-over 73 to grab a share of second-place and Santa Clara women's golf entered the clubhouse in fourth with a 306 team total after 18 holes of the West Coast Conference Championship tournament.
The Broncos are 14-swings behind Gonzaga, which paced the field with a first-round 292, six shots better than No. 28 Pepperdine. BYU is third at 300.
The middle round of the three-day event is scheduled for tee time starts at 8 a.m. PT on Friday with an adjusted distance of 6,012 yards on the par-71 Manito Golf and Country Club layout.
"Today wasn't our best day," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "But we feel more comfortable on the golf course after seeing it for another round. Our ball-striking wasn't as strong, but we were able to get a good practice session in after the round."
Busey had her streak of consecutive sub-par rounds end at five with an opening 72, leaving her in a tie for second with a trio of golfers just two shots off the pace. Busey birdied the final two holes, giving her a tournament-best four on the day to climb up the leaderboard.
A cold, overcast day in Spokane had an affect with no player scoring below par. Gonzaga's Quynn Duong took the clubhouse lead with an even-par 71.
Freshman Claire Choi ended the day six-shots back in a tie for 17th with an opening 77.
Sophomore Emily Sumner and rookie Duong Tran each carded a 78 to share 19th place with one other golfer. Junior Marni Murez totaled a first round 83.
"The team is confident and will be ready to play tomorrow," Kelly noted.
