Offense Comes To Life To Earn Softball Saturday Split

Tournament Central

SANTA CLARA, Calif.
 – On the second day of the Silicon Valley Classic, Santa Clara softball split with Cal Poly and Canisius. The Broncos (6-7) fell to the Mustangs (7-5) 4-3 but beat the Golden Griffins (5-7) 9-1 in 5 innings.

GAME 1
Things were going well for the Broncos through the first six innings, scoring two runs on a head's up play and adding one more with starter Lauren Anderson pitching around some baserunners.

In the seventh, however, Cal Poly's bats woke up, scoring four times to take the lead. Lily Amos doubled in the first run and with two down, Martin homered to right to tie the score at 3-all. After a single and a walk, Wulff singled in the go ahead run.

Krystyna Allman (4-1) was the beneficiary of the late runs, picking up the win in 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen after starter Steffi Best had given up two runs in 2 1/3 innings.

A strange play got the Broncos on the board in the third. With one out and the bases loaded, Emma Bickford hit a grounder to second but heads-up baserunning from Sammy Needham at first forced the defender to charge her and the Mustangs only got one out. The runner from second, Eleni Spirakis, came all the way around from second to score.

Bickford finished with two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Taylor Burns picked up the other Santa Clara RBI.

Anderson (1-1) allowed four runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

GAME 2
The Broncos offense got going with a three-run first and didn't slow down. They added three more in the third and three in the fourth and were helped by six errors from Canisius.

Emma Bickford led the way by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Ashley Trierweiler was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored and Eleni Spirakis added a pair of runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

Hannah Edwards (2-3) went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed just one run on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Golden Griffins got a pair of hits and an RBI from Lindsi Dennis with Morgan Altman scoring the lone run.

Starter Emily Nicosia was rocked in 2 innings, allowing six runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.
