Softball Drops Season Opener at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Stanford's high-powered offense proved too much for Santa Clara softball in a season opening 8-0 defeat in 5 innings on the road Sunday afternoon.

A pitcher's duel for the first three innings, the Cardinal (4-0) broke the scoreless tie with a five run fourth where they sent 11 batters to the plate. They would add three more runs in the fifth to finish the game off.

Emily Young went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs with Kristina Inouye adding two hits, a run scored, and an RBI as well. Sydney Steele knocked in two runs without a hit.

Alana Vawter (2-0) was terrific in the circle, holding the Broncos (0-1) to just two hits in the 5-inning shutout. She punched out five.

Regan Dias (0-1) was strong in the first three innings, surrendering just one hit to the Stanford offense but the fourth ruined her line. She ended up allowing five runs on seven hits with four walks in 4 innings.

Ashley Trierweiler and Emma Bickford had the lone Santa Clara hits.
