Two Wins for Women’s Tennis in Second Day of Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis got one win each in singles and doubles during the Bronco Invitational under sunny skies on the courts of Degheri Tennis Center on Saturday.  Despite missing its top two players, the Broncos stayed competitive in the second day of the tournament with a trio of three set singles matches.

Playing in the morning session, Santa Clara went 1-5 in singles with Elvena Gevargiz picking up the lone win against Tamara Culibrk of San José State, 6-2, 6-3.  Katya Tabachnik, Caitlyn Frankel and Nadine Del Carmen each went the distance, eventually losing in three sets against the SJSU singles players.

Tabachnik fell to Alba Pedrero Galindo, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-3, Frankel lost to Laura Malsert, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, and Del Carmen was downed by Mathilda Vidgren 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

"The singles matches were competitive with three, 3-set matches.  I was happy that we were able to push the opponents that far.  Katya, Caitlyn and Nadine all played really well in those three-set losses.  Elvena was fantastic today, playing San José State's number one player and getting the win," said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell.

Santa Clara went 1-2 in doubles with Del Carmen teaming up with Lindsey Pesqueira to defeat the San Franciso tandem of Shanna Dos Santos and Amber Del Rosario, 6-1.

"In doubles, we switched some teams around because we had a team that played the number one team from USF a bunch of times so we could get a different match up.  It was a good win for Nadine and Lindsey today," said Cabell.  "The doubles teams are playing solid despite the record today."
