Women’s Tennis Hit the Road for a Pair in Arizona This Weekend
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With four Arizona natives on the roster, Santa Clara women's tennis will have a strong following when they play the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday and a neutral site match against New Mexico State on Sunday in Tucson, Arizona.   First serve on Saturday is at 1 p.m. PT and on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.

"With four in-state players including three from Tucson in Lindsey Pesqueira, Maddie Pothoff and Jamie Schroer and Madison Clarke being from Phoenix, in a lot of ways, it's going to feel like a home match for us because we'll have a lot of family and friends there," said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell.  "U of A is very good being from the Pac-12 conference but I think we'll compete very well against them as we well against New Mexico State."

The Wildcats (3-3) had their three-match win streak snapped over the weekend losing a 4-3 contest to Kansas State at home.  They will face New Mexico State on Saturday before playing the Broncos on Sunday.

New Mexico State (1-2) last played on Feb. 1, beating in-state rival New Mexico 4-3.  The Aggies play two matches prior to facing the Broncos on Sunday, taking on UNLV and Arizona.

Santa Clara (1-2) picked up their first win of the spring over the weekend with a 4-3 win over UC Davis.

"The overall take from the win at Davis was that we've stressed to the team that it's going to take everybody, all 10 players on the roster.  And that's what we saw this past weekend," said Cabell.  "We weren't perfect but because some stepped up, we were able to pull the win regardless.  Our doubles was solid getting the point.  And I'm really proud of Jamie Schroer and Elvena Gevargiz for coming back from tough doubles matches and to turn it around to get the singles wins.  Also Giulia Hayer, our freshman, did a great job sticking with it being down a set and 5-1, hung in the match and wore down the opponent to split the sets before the opponent retired which clinched it for us.  We used our depth to get the results."
