Volleyball Falls to Red-Hot Boise State in Tournament Opener

BOISE, Idaho - Santa Clara volleyball was unable to solve the red-hot home team in the opener of the Boise State Classic.

The Boise State Broncos won their eighth-straight match with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Santa Clara on Thursday.

Kayly Pau and Makayla Hansen each had 10 kills to lead a balanced offensive attack for Boise State (10-1), which outhit Santa Clara .271 to .205.

Sophia Tulino has 12 kills and Julia Sangiacomo added 11 for Santa Clara (3-6).

Lauren Ohlinger had eight kills and Alyssa Wissinger six for Boise State, which had 8.0 total team blocks to 3.0 for Santa Clara.

The three-team, three-day event continues Friday Santa Clara playing Oregon State. The Beavers and Boise State, which knocked off 10th-ranked Utah on Monday, will meet on Saturday.

NOTES

  • Sophia Tulino (12) and Julia Sangiacomo (11) registered double-digit kills for the seventh time this season.
  • Boise State recorded 11 service aces to three for Santa Clara.
  • A kill by Sangiacomo tied the opening set at 16-all but Boise State scored eight of the next 10 points to help finish off the stanza.
  • Santa Clara seemed poised to even the match at 1-set all. A 4-0 run included a kill and an ace from Tulino to push the Santa Clara lead to 15-11 in the second. But Kayla Pau had three kills in a 5-0 flurry that pushed Boise State into a 20-16 lead and Santa Clara didn't get closer than three the remainder of the set.
  • Tulino and Michelle Shaffer helped get Santa Clara back in the third set. Two kills by each of them helped trim a six-point deficit to 20-17, forcing a Boise State timeout. But Boise State scored three of the next four points to take control.

QUOTABLE

We ran into a really big and confident Boise State team tonight. They really did a good job of making us earn every point and even though at times I thought we were playing the best volleyball we have played all year, it wasn't quite enough to secure a set. I am proud of how the team competed and fought through the whole match. It was especially exciting to see the production we were able to get offensively from our middles. We are looking forward to another battle tomorrow with Oregon State.
