Volleyball Closes Out Nonconference Play, Sweeps Oregon State

BOISE, Idaho - Michelle Shaffer had 12 kills, Julia Sangiacomo added 11 kills and seven digs, and Kat Georgiadis chipped in 26 digs to lead Santa Clara volleyball to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 victory over Oregon State on Friday in the Boise State Classic.

Lindsey Schell recorded 11 kills and Mychael Vernon had nine kills and 10 digs for the Beavers (2-7) who were outhit .173 to .024.

The Broncos (4-6), playing their final nonconference match, controlled the net throughout the match, posting a season-high 14.0 total team blocks to 8.0 for Oregon State.

Anna Stucchi had a career-best nine blocks and three of Santa Clara's four service aces.

NOTES

  • The Broncos earned their second sweep of the season (also vs. Nevada, Sept. 3). Santa Clara split its two matches at the Boise State Classic after falling to the host Broncos, 3-0, on Thursday.
  • Michelle Shaffer (12) recorded double-digit kills for the team-high ninth time this season. Julia Sangiacomo (11) registered double-digit kills for the eighth time.
  • The Broncos led the opening set by as many as seven points and then held off the Beavers. A kill from Sangiacomo increased the lead to 20-13, but the Beavers reeled off eight of the next nine points and they crept within 22-21. However, kills from Sangiacomo and Shaffer were sandwiched a combo block from Anna Stucchi and Shaffer to stave off the rally.
  • Santa Clara again had to fend off a challenge in the second set. An eight-point advantage turned into a 19-all tie behind a 9-1 run. The Broncos pulled ahead 23-20 on a kill by Shaffer and they closed it out on an attack error from Oregon State.
  • The Broncos took advantage of some Beaver miscues early in the third set and were never threatened. Three attack errors contributed to a 7-1 run that gave the Broncos a 9-3 lead. The Beavers were never closer than five the remainder of the set.
  • Sangiacomo and Kat Georgiadis were each named to the all-tournament team. Sangiacomo averaged 3.67 kills and 2.17 digs per set in the two matches, and Georgiadis posted 6.83 digs per set.

QUOTABLE

I'm really proud of how our team came out to compete today after a tough battle last night against Boise State. We were able to reset and really focus in on our serving and passing and it put us in great position to win this match today. We are looking forward to getting into the practice gym next week to prepare for our WCC opponents and get back into Leavey!
- Head coach Erin Lindsey

NEXT UP

The Broncos open West Coast Conference play on Thursday when Loyola Marymount visits Leavey Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
