Volleyball Downs Pacific to Win Fourth Straight

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara volleyball used an efficient offense and solid defensive effort to earn a 25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 25-18 victory over Pacific in a West Coast Conference match on Thursday night.

The Broncos (8-11, 4-5), who posted their fourth-straight win, outhit the Tigers .310 to .144 in the match including hitting .357 in the sets they won.

Julia Sangiacomo paced the Broncos with a 17-kill, 15-dig double-double while Sophia Tulino added 15 kills and Michelle Shaffer chipped in with 11 kills and nine digs.

Darina Kumanova posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs for Pacific (7-13, 4-5) which lost its third-consecutive match. Alexa Edwards matched Kumanova's efforts with 10 kills but only on .081 hitting.

The Broncos hit a sizzling .464 in the opening stanza behind seven kills by Tulino compared to .185 for the Tigers to take the set, 25-20.

The Tigers responded with a second set victory despite hitting only .152 but forced the Broncos to eight attack errors and holding them to a .073 hitting clip.

In the pivotal third set, the Santa Clara offense came alive again and made quick work of the Tigers with a 25-14 edge.  The Broncos hit .438 with just one attack error.

Santa Clara led from start to finish in the closing set.  The first four Broncos points came courtesy on attack errors by the Tigers, followed by three-straight kills and a service ace to open an 8-1 lead en route to a 25-18 set victory.

NOTES

  • Pacific leads the all-time series with Santa Clara 29-14.
  • The 17 kill, 15 dig double-double by Julia Sangiacomo was her fifth of the season and her third in a row. Her dig total matched the second highest total of the year. She had 18 digs at Auburn (Sept. 12).
