Baseball Drops Extra Inning Game to Gonzaga

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Gonzaga came back on three separate occasions to tie the game before scoring six runs in the top of the 13th inning to down Santa Clara baseball 10-4 to take the second game of the series on Saturday.

Facing Bronco reliever Jared Feikes in the top of the 13th, Gonzaga (10-8, 2-0) loaded the bases on two hits and a hit bats men with no outs.  The cleanup hitter Stephen Lund hit a dribbler out in front of the plate that catcher Jake MacNichols jumped on but could not get his footing under him as the runner Ernie Yake beat him to the plate to score the go-ahead run, 5-4.

With the bases still loaded, Andrew Orzel hit a single up the middle to a drawn in infield to plate two additional runs to open up the game, 7-4.  Gonzaga put up six runs in the inning sending 10 batters to the plate.

Santa Clara (6-11, 0-2) was one out away from evening the series but a throwing error by shortstop Jason Dicochea allowed the tying run to score in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.  Gonzaga had runners at first and second with two outs when Bronco closer Travis Howard induced a grounder to Dicochea whose throw into the dirt got past first baseman Ryan McCarthy allowing the tying runner to score.

The Broncos had a golden opportunity in the 12th when Matt Jew drove the ball into the right-center gap for a leadoff triple against Brody Jessee.  However, SCU could not bring him home as Jessee clamped down to escape the inning.  For the game, the Broncos finished 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Tony Boetto hit his first career home run, a solo shot, in the fourth to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead.  A lead they would maintain until Ryan Sullivan tied it up with a home run in the eighth.

SCU regained the lead in the bottom half of the eighth when Jake MacNichols went deep to put the Broncos up 4-3 but Gonzaga would once again tie it up in the ninth.

Matt Jew went 3-for-5 and two RBIs.  Boetto was the only other Bronco with multiple hits going 2-for-3 and scored two runs.

Four Bulldogs had two hit games including Orzel who drove in a game-high three runs.

Jessee (1-0) was credited with the win while Feikes (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
