Strong Pitches Helps Baseball to Win at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball shook off a couple of tough games and beat San Diego 3-2 in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon.

In need of a stopper, Skylar Hales stepped up and provided just that for the Broncos (23-19, 11-10 WCC). Hales (3-2) tossed 6 innings, allowing just one run on six hits to pick up the win. Alex Reelfs closed the door with 3 innings of relief for his second save on the year.

Offensively, Santa Clara got single runs in the first, fourth, and sixth innings in support of Hales. Eamonn Lance and John Hanley both collected two hits with Lance also driving in a run. Efrain Manzo had a double, RBI, and a run scored, and Michael Diaz also drove home a run.

The Toreros (27-15, 13-8 WCC) had big days from Caleb Ricketts and Dustin Allen. Rickets was 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the eighth to cut the Broncos lead down to 3-2. Allen finished 2-for 3 and tied the score in the second with an RBI infield single.

Kyle Carr started for San Diego and suffered the loss. In 3 innings, Carr (1-1) gave up two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
