Baseball Drops Finale to Washington, Splits Opening Weekend Series

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a back-and-forth affair, Santa Clara baseball came up on the short end in a 10-7 loss to Washington Monday to finish a four-game split.

The Broncos (2-2) jumped out to an early lead before the Huskies (2-2) answered right back. A four-spot for Santa Clara in the fourth was erased by Washington with two in the fifth and two in the sixth before a four-run top of the ninth proved to be the difference.

Michael Snyder was the offensive star for the Huskies, finishing with three hits and three RBIs. Cam Clayton and Will Simpson both added two RBIs with Simpson adding a home run and two runs scored.

The win went to Case Matter (1-0) who tossed 2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts. Calvin Kirchoff started but went just 2 innings and got a no-decision. He surrendered two runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

For the Broncos, the offense was paced by a three-hit day from Coleman Brigman who had an RBI and a run scored as well. Michael O'Hara, Dawson Brigman, and Malcolm Williams each had multi-hit games and O'Hara and D. Brigman scored twice each.

August Souza suffered the loss out of the bullpen. In 2 1/3 innings, Souza (0-1) allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Starter Jared Feikes went 2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits with two walks.
