Late Inning Rallies Come Up Just Short as Baseball Falls at LMU

LOS ANGELES – Rallies in the eighth and ninth came up just short as Santa Clara baseball lost to LMU 3-2 on Saturday night.

The Broncos (13-9, 4-4 WCC) scored twice in the eighth to get within a run and had the tying run on third with two down but couldn't bring him home.

In the ninth, Santa Clara put runners on the corners with two outs against the Lions' (12-15, 4-2 WCC) closer but he was able to escape the jam.

A trio of Broncos had two-hit games with Dawson Brigman, Robert Hipwell, and JonJon Berring all reaching the mark. Thomas Gould and Thomas Ferroggiaro collected the two RBIs for Santa Clara as Hipwell and Malcolm Williams were the Broncos to cross the plate.

Brandon Gomez (3-2) started and took the loss in 2 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.

LMU got all of their runs in the third. Jared Thomas had a two-run double and would finish the game with a pair of hits. Connor Blough added a sac fly later in the frame to complete the Lions' offense for the night.

Zach Kirby (2-3) got the win in a 6-inning start. He didn't allow a run while giving up five hits and two walks with eight punchouts. Jimmy Galicia collected his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth.
