Men’s Basketball Downs Cal Poly to Win Fourth Straight on Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A career-high scoring night by Jalen Williams and a stifling team defense propelled Santa Clara men's basketball to an 87-57 victory over Cal Poly in a nonconference tilt on Friday night.

Williams set a career high with 26 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to pace the Broncos, with 19 of those points coming in the first half, nearly matching Cal Poly's first half scoring output as the Broncos led 34-21 at the half.

Santa Clara (4-0) limited Cal Poly (1-3) to 37-percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers to extend their win streak to four to start off the season.

Three other Broncos scored in double figures including 15 by PJ Pipes, 12 by Keshawn Justice and 11 by Carlos Stewart.

Kyle Colvin was the only Cal Poly player to score in double digits with 18 points.  In the first haf, Colvin and Alimamy Koroma were the lone Mustangs to score, combining for 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting while the rest of the team went 0 for 11.

In the second half, Cal Poly got scoring help from others but it was too late as five of the first six made field goals by the Broncos came from beyond the 3-point line to double the 13 point halftime lead to 26 just five minutes into the half.

The Broncos maintained more than a 20 point lead the rest of the way, pushing the advantage to many as 34 on the strength of 55-percent shooting in the second half.   SCU made 6 of 11 3-pointers in the second half after shooting just 1 of 13 in the opening 20 minutes.

GAME NOTES:

  • Jaden Bediako made his first start of the year in place of Josip Vrankic.
  • Santa Clara shot a season-best 22 of 25 from the free throw line.
