Men’s Basketball Falls to Fresno State in SoCal Challenge Title Game

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - Fresno State held a decisive edge at the free throw line and held Santa Clara men's basketball to a season-low 36-percent shooting in the 59-52 win to claim the Venue Twin SoCal Challenge Surf Division Championship on Wednesday night in a game that ended past midnight.

Fresno State (5-0) led 27-25 at the intermission and outscored Santa Clara 32-27 in the second half with 17 of those points coming from the free throw line to snap the Broncos' five-game win streak.

Orlando Robinson scored a game-high 22 points and Jordan Campbell added 12 as they combined to shoot 12 of 13 free throws for Fresno State.  For the game, the Bulldogs went 22-for-25 from the line compared to 9-for-12 for the Broncos.

Late in the second half, Santa Clara (5-1) chipped away at Fresno State's double digit lead down to four points on two-straight 3-pointers by Keshawn Justice.  However, the Bulldogs made four-straight free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.

PJ Pipes and Keshawn Justice paced the Broncos with 12 points each while Jalen Williams tallied 10.  Parker Braun pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to turn a three point deficit to a 23-15 lead to take their biggest lead in the opening half.  The Broncos closed out the half on back-to-back layups by Pipes and Braun to trail 27-25 at the half but that is as close as they would get the rest of the game.

Santa Clara, who entered the game shooting 55-percent from the field on the season, started the game going 4-for-5 but made just 14 of 45 the rest of the game.
