Men's Hoops Ready For Battle of the Alameda Showdown Against SJSU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball will welcome their crosstown rival San Jose State on Saturday for a 2 p.m. PT showdown inside the Leavey Center. The Broncos are going for their sixth-straight victory on the year.

NOTES

  • The Broncos are playing in their 3rd of nine-straight home games. SCU is 19-4 in home games dating back to the start of the 2021-22 season and are a perfect 5-0 on the year.

  • SCU is 8-2 and riding a four-game win streak into Saturday's game. They are currently tied for first in the WCC standings with USF. 

  • Saturday's game will be the 114th installment in the long-standing series between the Broncos and Spartans.

  • The Broncos held on against New Mexico State in their last outing, taking down the Aggies 66-65. Three players scored at least 16 pts in the win. 

  • Brandin Podziemski is the reigning WCC Player of the Week, his second POTW award of the year. He's the first Bronco since Jared Brownridge in 2016-17 with multiple WCC POTW honors. 

  • Podziemski is averaging 20.1 ppg and 9.3 rpg, good for 1st and 2nd, respectively in the WCC. He is 2nd in the WCC and 14th nationally with four double-doubles. 

  • Santa Clara ranks 15th nationally in rebounds per game (41.7) and 4th in defensive rpg (30.2) 

  • Parker Braun (14) and Jaden Bediako (13) rank first and second, respectively, in the WCC in blocked shots. The Broncos are 2nd as a team with 4.4 per game. 

  • Herb Sendek has 518 career victories, good for 66th all-time in NCAA D1 history.

  • San Jose State, led by second-year head coach Tim Miles, is 7-3 on the season and coming off a 58-48 win over Cal State Bakersfield. The Spartans are plus-11.1 on the boards, good for sixth-best nationally with an average of 38.7 per game. They are averaging 69.6 points per contest and are shooting the ball at a 46.8 clip. Omari Moore leads the team at 13.5 ppg while newcomer Sage Tolbert is averaging 10.3 points and 8.4 boards per game. His 84 total rebounds leads the Mountain West and is good for 36th nationally. Big man Ibrahima Diallo is the MW's best shot blocker with 21 on the year, good for 20th nationally. 

  • This will be the 114th time the crosstown rivals have met on the hardwood with Santa Clara holding the advantage at 83-30. The Broncos have won the last three over the Spartans, including a 79-57 victory in San Jose last season.
