Broncos Host Cal For Sunday Afternoon Showdown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's hoops will look to keep their momentum rolling on Sunday as they go for a third-straight victory inside the Leavey Center. The Broncos will host the Cal Golden Bears for a 2:00 p.m. PT tip that will be streamed live on the WCC Network.

NOTES

  • The Broncos are playing in their 6th of nine-straight home games. SCU is 21-5 in home games dating back to the start of the 2021-22 season and are 7-1 on the year.

  • SCU erased two 11-point deficits against UC Irvine to defeat the Anteaters 86-74. Carlos Stewart (29) and Keshawn Justice (26) both posted career highs for points and 3-pointers, combining for 55 points and 12 triples.

  • Stewart is averaging 21.5 ppg over the last six games. 

  • Justice is 2nd nationally in 3PT attempts (106) and 18th in 3PT made (38).

  • The Broncos have had two players score 20 or more on three occassions. 

  • Brandin Podziemski has won WCC Player of the Week honors twice in the first five weeks of the year. He's the first Bronco since Jared Brownridge in 2016-17 with multiple WCC POTW honors. 

  • Podziemski ranks second in the WCC in rebounding (8.7) and fourth in PPG (18.2). He ranks fifth nationally in points (237), fourth in steals (31), fifth in FG attempts (181) and ninth in rebounds (113).

  • Stewart ranks third in the WCC in free throw shooting (85.4).

  • Justice has scored 11 or more in eight of the last nine games.

  • Santa Clara ranks 30th nationally in rebounds per game (40.1) and 21st in defensive rpg (29.0) 

  • Podziemski leads the WCC and is 15th nationally with five double-doubles. 

  • Jaden Bediako leads the WCC with 16 blocked shots while Parker Braun ranks third with 14. The Broncos are 3rd as a team with 3.9 per game. 

  • Herb Sendek has 520 victories, good for 66th all-time in NCAA D1 history.

  • The California Golden Bears head into Sunday's contest still looking for their first win of the year after an 0-11 start. Led by fourth-year head coach Mark Fox, Cal is averaging 57.6 points and 32.1 rebounds per game. Devin Askew has been a bright spot with his individual play, ranking second in the Pac-12 with 18.2 ppg. 

  • Sunday's game will be the 76th meeting all-time between the programs with Cal holding the advantage at 46-29. The Bears won last season in Berkeley, 72-60, but Santa Clara won the last time they squared off inside the Leavey Center - a 71-52 victory on Dec. 7, 2019.
