Men's Hoops Opens WCC Tournament Tomorrow

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball has all the momentum after closing the regular season on a seven-game win streak, and they will look to translate that momentum into another win on Saturday evening in the quarterfinal of the 2023 University Credit Union WCC Basketball Tournament. The Broncos received a double bye for the second-consecutive year and will face San Francisco, who defeated Pacific 80-63 on Friday evening, in tomorrow's game. The game is slated for a 9:30 p.m. PT tip and will be televised on ESPN2.

NOTES

• The Broncos finished the regular season with a 23-8 record - their most regular season wins since 1968-69.

• At 11-5, SCU also had their most conference wins since 1994-95.

• SCU finished third in the WCC Standings for the second consecutive season. It's the first time they've done that since 2000-01 and 2001-02.

• The Broncos closed the regular season on a 7-game win streak, their longest in conference play since 1994-95.

• SCU defeated San Diego in their last outing, 81-63. Podziemski tallied his fourth-straight double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

• Three Broncos earned a spot on the All-WCC Team. Brandin Podziemski and Carlos Stewart are first team members and Keshawn Justice is a second team pick for the second-straight year.

• Podziemski was named WCC Co-Player of the Year. First Bronco to win the award since John Bryant (2008-09).

• Podz was also named WCC Newcomer of the Year becoming the first Bronco since Jared Brownridge (2013-14) to win the award.

• Podziemski won WCC Player of the Week honors four times this season - the most in program history. 

• Podziemski leads the league in rebounding (8.8) and is third in scoring at 19.9 ppg. He's one of just three players in NCAA D1 that is averaging 19/8/3.

• Podziemski has tallied 12 double-doubles on the year, including the last four games, to lead the WCC. It's the most by a Bronco since John Bryant in 2008-09.

• Podziemski ranks sixth nationally in 3-point shooting (44.5 percent).

• The Broncos have their third 20-win season in a span of four years for the first time since 1981-82 through 1984-85. 

• SCU's point total of 2,395 is already the sixth-most in program history.

Carlos Stewart is second on the team with 10 20-point games and ranks 11th in the WCC with an average of 15.1 ppg. 

Keshawn Justice leads the WCC in 3pt made (89), attempted (237) and made per game (2.9).

• Justice is 13th all-time in career scoring at SCU and needs 32 points to move up to 12th.

• Sophomore forward Camaron Tongue is turned in back-to-back double figure scoring with 12 and 13 points, respectively.

• Freshman center Christoph Tilly has scored 11 or more in four of the last eight games.

• Head Coach Herb Sendek is tied for the 60th most wins in NCAA D1 history with 533 victories.

• The Broncos swept San Francisco in the regular season, first winning 79-67 at home before completing the sweep with an 84-70 victory on the Hilltop.
