First Day of WCC Men's Golf Championship in the Books

HENDERSON, Nev. - Santa Clara men's golf is in seventh place after one round of play in the West Coast Conference Championship.

Berk Harvey, Jack Avrit and Alex Conley had the three best rounds for the Broncos who shot an opening-round 2-over-par 290 on Thursday at Reflection Bay Golf Club.

No. 8-ranked Pepperdine leads the field after firing a 19-under 269. BYU is second at 11-under 277 and San Francisco is one shot back of the Cougars in third at the three-day event.

Santa Clara is just four shots behind fifth-place Loyola Marymount.

Harvey's first round ranged wildly, but ended with a flourish. He had two eagles, but three double bogeys. Harvey, who is tied for 15th, ended with two birdies to finish at 1-under 71.

Avrit and Conley are tied for 17th at even-par. Avrit had two birdies and two pars on his scorecard, and Conley posted four birdies and four bogeys.

Tim Widing of San Francisco and Gavin Cohen of LMU are tied atop the leaderboard at 6-under 66.

Matt McCarty also figured into the scoring for the Broncos with a 3-over 75. He is tied for 37th.

Oscar Zimmerman rounded out the Santa Clara lineup with 6-over 78 which has him tied for 42nd.
