Men's Golf Off to Strong Start at Saint Mary's Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Jack Avrit shot his collegiate best round, helping Santa Clara men's golf post its lowest 18-hole score of the season on the opening day of the Saint Mary's Invitational.

Avrit carded a 7-under-par 64 which has him tied atop the leaderboard with Craig Ronne of Oregon after Monday's first round of the 19-team tournament that is being played at Poppy Hills Golf Club.

In an event that features five schools in the top 50 of the Golfstat.com rankings, the Broncos are tied for third with Oregon at 4-under 280.

No. 6-ranked Stanford leads the field at 15-under 269 and San Francisco is second at 7-under 277.

Avrit had nine birdies on his scorecard, including four in a row to close out the front nine of the 7,002-yard course.

Konrad Brauckmeyer also had a strong opening round for the Broncos. He shot a 2-under 69 and is tied for 12th place.

Oscar Zimmerman and Berk Harvey also figured into the scoring for Santa Clara.

An eagle on the 18th hole helped Zimmerman posted an 1-over 72 to end up in a tie for 41st. Harvey carded a 4-over and is tied for 75th.

Santa Clara posted its best round since firing a 280 in the final round at the 2019 Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational (Oct. 23).

Nolan Forsman shot a 5-over 76 and is tied for 85th.

NOTES

  • Jack Avrit (64) posted his fifth collegiate round of 67 or lower. His previous best score occurred in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Regional when he carded a 6-under 65.
  • Avrit's nine birdies tied for the most in the field with Ethan Ng of Stanford.
