Overfelt Ties For Third With Final Round 72 At Bandon Dunes Championship

Overfelt Ties For Third With Final Round 72 At Bandon Dunes Championship

by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

BANDON, Ore. - After opening with an under par Round 1, Calder Overfelt (71-72--143) was able to sustain his good play to shoot an even-par 72 in the Final Round to earn a tie for third place in the Bandon Dunes Championship, just three shots off of the individual medalist.

Part of Overfelt's impressive performance over the tournament was avoiding big numbers as he was able to not record a double bogey or worse in either round. Over the 36 holes, he recorded 10 birdies (six of them being in the Final Round) and nine bogeys and was second in Par 3 scoring with an average of 2.75 strokes and 2-under cumulative on the shorter holes. The 1-under 143 third place finish is the best of his first season as a Bronco.

Coming in with a tied 12th finish at 2-over overall was Julien Paltrinieri (76-70--146) who found some difficulty during his first round but was able to balance it out with some birdies to shoot a 4-over 76. His second round was a much more polished display as he made four birdies and had a double bogey to shoot a 2-under 70. Nolan Forsman (77-75--152) also did not have a double bogey on either of his scorecards as he played steady and finished at T49th at 8-over. Also finishing at 8-over and in a tie for 49th was Jolo Magcalayo (82-70--152) who was playing as an individual and had a stellar final round which included five birdies.

Alex Conley (83-75--158) found some struggles during his first round but was able to turn it around to shoot and 3-over 75 in Round 2 and finish in a tie for 89th at 14-over. The tough conditions of Round 1 also got to Viraj Garewal (84-77--161) but that did not hinder him from posting a respectable score in the second round; he finished in a tie for 99th at 17-over.

Taking home the team title was Oregon (299-282--581) at 5-over and much thanks to a 6-under cumulative second round. Oregon also produced the individual medalist as Owen Avrit had two rounds of 2-under 70. As a team, the Broncos went 307-292--599 and had an improvement of 15 shots over Rounds 1 and 2 and finished in a tie for 9th out of the 18-team field. For the four Broncos who competed in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout in Alameda, Calif., play of the Final Round was canceled due to weather, making the results of yesterday's play stand. The Broncos will return to the Pacific Northwest next weekend for The Duck hosted by Oregon.
