by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

DAVIS - Julien Paltrinieri and Viraj Garewal led the team today both coming in with sub-par scores as Santa Clara played their first of three rounds of the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis.

Paltrinieri struck gold on the par-5s today as he birdied all four of them at El Macero Country Club; he ended up posting a 4-under 68 and sitting in a tie for 5th. Fellow Graduate Student Garewal was just one shot off of Paltrinieri as he came in with a 3-under 69 and is at tied-8th; the two of them also each had six birdies in their rounds.

Eugenio Bernardi got off to a slower start today as he was 4-over through 10 holes but he was able to turn it around as he went 2-under in his final five holes to shoot a 2-over 74 and be in the T53 position. Calder Overfelt, who solely led the field in par-3 scoring today at 2-under overall had a similar round to Bernardi's as he went 2-under through his final seven holes to shoot a 3-over 75 and be tied for 62nd. Cameron Kaiser, who is getting his first start this season this week, struggled on the front nine but came in four shots better on the back nine and ended up posting a 10-over 82 and is in T98th.

Leading the field in total number of birdies today was Santa Clara as they had 20. The Broncos posted a 2-under 268 opening round and are tied for 8th at the moment. They will look to climb even higher in the ranks tomorrow when they begin to tee off No. 10 at 8:15 AM PT tomorrow for the second round.
