by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

BREMERTON, Wash. - The four Broncos whose scores counted today cumulatively went even par, with Calder Overfelt and Julien Paltrinieri both posting sub-par rounds while Alex Conley turned in a level scorecard in the opening round of the West Coast Conference Championship.

Shooting rounds of 1-under 71 was the pair of Overfelt and Paltrinieri who each went about their rounds in different ways. Overfelt got on a roll early going 4-under through seven holes then had a couple of bogeys on par-5s on the back to go 3-over through the next 11 holes. Paltrinieri had a relatively simple round with three birdies and two bogeys; they are both sitting in the T8 position. Conley was also able to avoid a double bogey on his card today as he had four birdies and four bogeys to shoot an even par 72 and be in tied-14th place.

Eugenio Bernardi was even through his first 11 holes of the day then struggled with a stretch of four consecutive bogeys but was able to stay composed to have a birdie-birdie finish to shoot 2-over 74 and be in T23rd. After a difficult front nine where he went 4-over, Viraj Garewal also showed improvement going on the back nine to shoot a 4-over 76 and be in T36th.

Three out of the four ranked teams in the field, USF, Pepperdine, and BYU, make up the podium positions currently and are all within two strokes of each other with USF leading the pack at 5-under overall. Sant Clara currently sits right behind them in a tie for fourth with LMU at even overall. The Broncos also led the field by a significant margin today in par-4 scoring at 4-under overall. They will again go off at 8:20 AM PT tomorrow morning, this time in threesomes alongside LMU and San Diego.
