Broncos Maintain Position On Day Two Of WCC Championship

by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

BREMERTON, Wash. - Santa Clara men's golf had an almost identical day to yesterday that was highlighted by sub-par rounds from Viraj Garewal and Calder Overfelt.

Garewal made a comeback today after opening with a 4-over 76 by shooting a 2-under 70 with two eagles on his card. The two eagles came on the two par-5s on the back nine, Nos. 11 and 14; he is currently tied for 19th at 2-over overall. For Overfelt, the birdies continued to fly today as he shot a second consecutive round of 1-under 71; this round he avoided a double bogey and is now in tied-11th place at 2-under. He also is second in the field in par-4 scoring as he has been a cumulative 4-under on the middle-distance holes.

Coming off a sub-par Round 1, Julien Paltrinieri went out with an even-par front nine but came in at 3-over on the back to shoot a 3-over 75 and like Garewal, is tied for 19th. There is a third Bronco sitting in the T19 position, Alex Conley, who was even through 13 holes today but came away with a double bogey on No. 14 but that would be the extent of the damage as he shot a 2-over 74. Another player who has shot back-to-back rounds of the same score in the first two rounds is Eugenio Bernardi. He was 4 over par through 14 holes today but ended well with three birdies in his last four holes to shoot another 2-over 74. His score today was counted towards the team total and he is in a tie for 30th at 4-over.

Through the first two rounds of the WCC Championship, Santa Clara and LMU have matched each cumulative round score and continue to remain in tied-4th place out of the nine teams competing and at 1-over overall. The two teams are also four shots clear of 45th-ranked San Diego who sits in solo 6th at a cumulative 5 strokes over par. 44th-ranked BYU climbed the leaderboard today to sit in the lead at 18-under overall and BYU's Zac Jones leads the individual race at 9-under overall. A podium finish for Santa Clara is not out of the question yet but a day of low rounds will need to be in store as they tee off for the Final Round at 8:20 AM PT again alongside LMU and San Diego.
