Santa Clara Men's Soccer to Host Final Regular-Season Match on Saturday

Nov. 10, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team (9-7-0, 3-2-0 WCC) will host Loyola Marymount Saturday with both teams battling for third place in the final West Coast Conference standings. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium (capacity 6,800).

Going into the weekend, the Broncos has an opportunity to finish as high as second in the WCC. However, Gonzaga's 3-2 overtime win over Portland on Friday clinched at least second-place for the Zags with an outside shot at catching league-leader San Diego.

Saturday's contest will mark the final regular-season game for three Santa Clara seniors. Joe Ascolese (Chattaroy, Wash.), Brett Davis (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Michael Goehring (Fresno, Calif.) will be playing their final regular-season match for the Broncos. The trio has been a part of three NCAA Tournament participants, including two appearances in the College Cup. Last year, the seniors were instrumental in helping lead the Broncos to the NCAA finals. The senior class has compiled a 50-25-5 record over the last four years, heading into Sunday's match against LMU.

Santa Clara enters the game having won four of its last five matches with the only loss during that span coming at the hands of WCC champion San Diego by a tight 1-0 margin on the road. The Broncos have only allowed two goals in its last five matches and have three shutouts during that time. In addition to its current 3-2 conference mark, the Broncos have faced five teams ranked in the top-10 in the nation in its last nine matches.

Loyola Marymount is 10-6-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the WCC. The Lions have played an incredible seven overtime matches this season and have compiled a 6-0-1 record. LMU's 10 victories set a school record for wins in a season and sophomore forward Arturo Torres currently holds five scoring records.

Tickets for Saturday's contest are available online at www.SantaClaraBroncos.com or at Buck Shaw Stadium ticket office 60 minutes prior to kickoff.
