SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior defender Jason Pan was named to Soccer America's National Team of the Week after leading the third-ranked Broncos to the GMU/Comfort Inn Classic title in Fairfax, Va. last weekend. The honor is the first in Pan's career. It is also the second such honor for SCU this season after midfielder Medhi Ballouchy was named to the team on September 7.
Pan picked up All-Tournament team honors after helping the Broncos capture their second tournament championship of 2004. Starting every match of the season on the back line, Pan has been instrumental in SCU's defensive success. In only four matches, the Broncos have posted two shutouts and allowed only two goals.
In Sunday's win over Loyola College, Pan scored Santa Clara's first goal of the match to even the score with less than nine minutes remaining. It marked the first goal of the season for the Milwaukee, Wis. native. Jeff Scott would score four minutes later to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory over the Greyhounds.
Santa Clara is 4-0-0 on the season and opens its home schedule on Thursday night against San Jose State. The match is part of the annual Santa Clara/adidas Classic and the annual Rivalry Series with the Spartans. The event is also Santa Clara Community Day, presented by the Bank of Santa Clara with all residents of Santa Clara receiving discount admission to both games. Call 408/554-4660 for tickets.
