WASHINGTON - Santa Clara men's soccer went toe to toe with the No. 2-ranked Georgetown Hoyas on the road but was edged 1-0 on Kieran Sargent's second half goal on Monday afternoon at Shaw Field.
In the 59th minute, Sargent cleaned up a loose ball on a scramble in front of the goal and found the back of the net past Broncos goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet on the near post.
The win was the Hoyas' (4-0) fourth-straight to open the season while the loss was the first for the Broncos (3-1) on the year.
Santa Clara searched for the equalizer the rest of the match with their best opportunities coming on the foot of Oladayo Thomas. His shots in the 76th and 82nd minutes were both turned away by Hoyas goalkeeper Ethan Koehler.
The Hoyas meanwhile continued to put the Broncos defense on their heels peppering 12 second half shots.
Georgetown controlled the run of play from the opening kickoff, tilting the field in its favor early on. However, Thomas was inserted midway through the opening half and his presence helped to settle the Broncos down as he recorded two shots including one on frame. The Broncos leading scorer finished with a game-high five shots with three of those on target.
For the match, Georgetown held a 20-6 advantage on shots but only a 5-3 edge on shots on goal.
Sean Zawadzki who was credited with an assist on Sargent's goal led the Hoyas with four shots.
Cases Mundet recorded four saves to three for Koehler.
NOTES:
• Santa Clara is now 1-1 all-time against Georgetown.
• Sargent's goal was the first one conceded by Cases Mundet in 574 minutes dating back to last spring.
