ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The New York Red Bulls selected Santa Clara University senior Jide Ogunbiyi as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft Thursday afternoon. Ogunbiyi is the 21st student-athlete from SCU to be selected in the MLS Draft and is the highest pick since Amaechi Igwe (No. 12) in 2007.
"We are very pleased for Jide," said Santa Clara men's soccer head coach Cameron Rast. "He had a great showing at the MLS Combine and, with the 18th pick by New York, it is evidence of that and I am very proud of him."
Ogunbiyi helped the Broncos to back-to-back WCC titles (2006 & 2007) and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. He wrapped up an impressive four-year career on the Mission Campus in 2008 by earning his fourth West Coast Conference honor as he was named to the All-WCC first team and his second NSCAA All-Far West Region accolade.
In 2008, Ogunbiyi was once again a fixture in the Broncos defense and started in 14 of the Broncos 20 contests. The Gwynedd, Pa., native ends his collegiate career with 30 career points on 11 goals and eight assists. Ogunbiyi has also spent time with the Nigerian National team. As a junior, he was with the Nigerian U23 for the Olympic qualifying match against Ghana and in 2008 he was invited to try out for the Nigerian Olympic soccer team.
