On Fri., April 20, Santa Clara bested Portland 5-2. The Broncos grabbed the doubles points with wins by their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings. Kyle Dandan and Tom Pham downed Stefan Micov and Ratan Gill 8-2 before Eugene Muchynski and Nico Vinel secured the doubles portion.
Against Portland, Dandan eased by Stefan Micov in straight sets for Santa Clara's first singles point. Sophomore John Lamble acquired his sixth-straight singles win in the No. 2 spot. Lamble defeated Geoff Hernandez 6-1, 6-4 to put the Broncos ahead 3-0. After two Portland victories, Ilya Osintsev continued his productive freshman campaign with a victory over Justin Guay. With the dual match in hand, Muchynski added an insurance point by downing Daniel Coelho 6-1, 6-4 to give the Broncos a 5-2 win.
On Sat., April 21, the Broncos secured a second place finish in the WCC with a dominant 7-0 performance over Gonzaga. Santa Clara overwhelmed the Zags, sweeping both doubles and singles. In doubles, Osintsev and Lamble teamed up for a solid win over the country's No. 79-ranked tandem. Lamble and Osintsev are currently ranked No. 84 in the ITA's doubles rankings and added to their resume with the 8-2 win. The two Broncos are the reigning WCC Doubles Players of the Month.
In singles, all six Santa Clara players posted victories. Dandan and Lamble secured the points in the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, respectively. Senior Nicolas Vinel added a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the No. 3 spot.
Junior Tom Pham tallied his 21st win of the season in the No. 4 spot. Pham won the first set 6-4, but was not able to close out the match in the second frame. Pham continued to battle and edged Zhia HwaChong 1-0(2) in the third set. Osintsev and Muchynski, who have held down the No. 5 and No. 6 spots all season, added victories to complete the Bronco sweep.
With the two victories this weekend, Santa Clara secures second place in the WCC. The Broncos finish conference play with a 7-1 record. Their only blemish in conference play was against No. 7 Pepperdine. In conference play, Santa Clara picked up impressive victories over then-No. 19 San Diego and then-No. 40 BYU. On their way to a 21-4 record, the Broncos have set a school-best in wins in a season and are currently just one spot removed from the highest ITA ranking in school history. The program-high for ITA ranking is No. 29, which as achieved earlier this season.
The Broncos can add to their impressive season in the WCC Tournament held in San Diego from April 25-28. Santa Clara will be the second seed in the tournament. Check back for a full preview of the conference tournament later this week.
