DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis wrapped up their season-opening competition at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational on Sunday. Sophomores Connor Garnett and Robert Seby came up short in their doubles semifinal matchup.

Garnett and Seby upset the No. 4 seed in the quarterfinal on Saturday but were unable to defeat David Goulak and Tommy Lam (UC Davis) on Sunday. The duo challenged the host's doubles team but lost, 8-6.

"I think there were some good things to take out of the match and some things we need to learn from sooner rather than later," head coach Niall Angus said. "The energy was great, both of them compete to the fullest every time they step on the court but fortune favors the brave in those matches. We were a little cautious and passive, for matches this early in the year that's understandable. As we move through the year, we'll become more confident and aggressive."

Angus was pleased with the squad's performance for the opening tournament and is looking forward to the next competition.

"This tournament was our first barometer of where we're at against other teams," Angus said. "We have another 10 days of practice until the ITA Regionals, which is a good amount of time to make the adjustments we need to make. It was good to get matches under our belt and show everybody why we put in the work and why it's so important."

The Broncos return to action on Oct. 13-17 at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkeley, California.
