SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis head coach Niall Angus announced the hiring of Edson Ortiz, a three-time All-Southeastern Conference selection at Alabama, as an assistant coach.

"I am beyond excited to be joining the Bronco family," said Ortiz.  "I want to thank Coach Niall for giving me this opportunity and putting his trust in me. He has done an amazing job on building a great team culture and I am looking forward to the future of the team.  It is an exciting time for the program and I am thrilled to be a part of it."

Ortiz joins the Broncos from Eagle-Fustar Tennis Academy in Sunnyvale, California, where he was a coach.

"This is a very big day for the program," said Angus.  "Having the opportunity to bring on a coach with the level of tennis knowledge and past playing experience that Edson has will have a profound impact on our student-athletes."

Prior to his stint at Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz had a decorated five-year career for the Crimson Tide where he was: a three-time All-SEC selection; a two-time SEC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year (co-Scholar-Athlete in 2020); named four times to the SEC spring academic honor roll; appeared in the 2018 NCAA doubles tournament and a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.

"Edson's proven record of developing some of the best junior players in the state of California will be a huge asset in challenging for conference titles moving forward. We share the same vision for Bronco tennis and I am excited to get to work with Edson in continuing to build on the success of the program."

In addition to his coaching duties at Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz also taught at the Nike Tennis Camps over three summers, developing the play of kids aged nine to 18.

The Chihuahua, México native received both his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and a master's degree in hospitality management from Alabama.
