TUCSON, Ariz. - This afternoon the Santa Clara men's tennis team fell to Big 12 opponent Nebraska 6-1 in the final match of its Arizona road trip. The Broncos are now 7-4 on the season with the loss.
The match started off with a fight for the doubles point where Brian Brogan and Jay Wong defeated Nebraska's Christopher Aumueller and Andre Stenger in decisive fashion at the No. 2 spot 8-2. Andrew Kells and Grant Fleming followed up with an strong performance at the No. 3 position as the duo took on Benedikt Lindheim and Francios Van Impe of Nebraska. Kells and Fleming were able to force the match into a tie breaker, but could not hold on in the end, falling 9-8(7).
The Broncos struggled to build any momentum versus the Huskers, but a bright spot was found at the No. 3 singles position where Jay Wong grabbed a point in two strong sets. Wong faced Nebraska's David Bendheim and gave an outstanding performance with a strong 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Santa Clara will be on a week-long break before taking the court again at home on March 14 versus UAB at the Degheri Tennis Center. This match begins a seven-match, month-long home stand for the Broncos.
