Men's Tennis On Arizona Road Trip This Weekend

March 3, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - This coming weekend the Santa Clara men's tennis team travels to Tucson, Ariz. to take on No. 35 Arizona on Friday, Mar. 3 and Big 12 opponent Nebraska on Saturday, Mar. 4. The Broncos enter this weekend road trip on a four match win streak after a 7-0 sweep of No. 74 Xavier earlier this week.

"This is a big weekend for us playing a Pac 10 and a Big 12 team on the road," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "The rain has made it difficult to develop any continuity and momentum in practice and matches, so we are really motivated to get back on the road and play two strong teams."

The Broncos have a 7-2 record entering this weekend and are coming off of their second 7-0 sweep of the season having defeated No. 74 Xavier 7-0. SCU has seen consistent strong singles performances from freshman Tom Pham, who has compiled a 10-4 cumulative record this season, and sophomore Andrew Kells who is leading the Broncos this season with a 13-4 singles record.

Arizona is currently 6-3 on the season, but is entering the weekend coming off of two consecutive 4-3 losses versus Texas Tech and Denver. Prior to its matchups with Texas Tech and Denver, Arizona had built up a four match win streak, defeating New Mexico State, Cal Poly, BYU, and South Alabama. However, with the losses, the Wildcats fell ten spots in the ITA rankings, from No. 25 to 35.

Nebraska has compiled a 5-3 season record and will host Drake on Mar. 3 before entering this weekend's contest. Currently the Huskers are on a two match win streak, but have recently fallen out of ITA's top 75 rankings after earning a No. 65 ranking in February.

Both matches are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. PST at Arizona's LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. Match results will be posted throughout the weekend.
