Men's Water Polo Splits Final Matches at Slugfest

Sept. 29, 2002

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Sophomore Mark Perlite scored the golden goal in the fourth overtime to lead the Santa Clara University men's water polo team to a 4-3 victory over Claremont this morning as part of the Slugfest Invitational, hosted by UC Santa Cruz. The Broncos defeated the Division III seventh-ranked Claremont to improve to 6-10 on the season.

Santa Clara closed out play at the tournament with a 13-1 loss to Air Force and are currently 6-11 overall.

The match against Claremont was tied at three goals apiece at the end of regulation. Neither team scored in the two three-minute overtime periods, or the third sudden-death overtime. Perlite scored the game-winner on the counter attack. Sophomore Mark Oda scored twice and freshman Whit Gilfillan added a goal for the Broncos in that contest.

Against Air Force, freshman Jon Greco scored the Broncos lone goal, in the first quarter.

"I think that four-overtime game wore us out a little bit for the final contest," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "With so many guys battling the flu, I'm happy we went 2-3 this weekend."

Sophomore netminder Peter Moore posted 11 saves against Claremont and added nine blocks against the Falcons.

The Broncos will return to the Bay Area and host Harvard on Friday, October 4. The match will take place at West Valley College in Saratoga and is slated to begin at 5:15 p.m.
