Men's Water Polo Wins Twice at Convergence Tournament

Oct. 12, 2002

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Nick Takahashi scored his third goal of the game with 40 seconds left in the second overtime as the Santa Clara University men's water polo team defeated Division III eighth-ranked Chapman 5-4 this afternoon at Haldeman Pool. The Broncos opened the morning with a 12-6 win over ninth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer. The wins closed out participation at the Convergence Tournament, hosted by Claremont College.

The Broncos went 3-1 this weekend and improved to 4-0 in overtime games. Santa Clara's overall record is now 9-13.

"Our guys really know how to put it together and win in overtime," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "They have so much heart and composure when the game's on the line."

Wilbur added that sophomore netminder Peter Moore had another outstanding game in the cage, racking 15 saves, including some huge ones in the fourth quarter and overtime that kept the Broncos alive. He added five steals in the contest.

"It was a very defensive first half and we were down 2-0 at half," Wilbur continued. "The guys were so fired up to come back and win."

In addition to Takahashi's three goals, juniors Logan Gee and J.P. Doucette added scores for the Broncos.

In the opener against Pomona, Takahashi scored four times, while Gee added three scores. One goal each was added by Doucette, sophomores Mark Oda and Mark Perlite, and freshmen Matt Sanchez and Whit Gilfillan.

Moore added nine saves and five steals in this contest.

"Peter did a great job coming out of the cage for us," Wilburn said. "We also had one of our best man-up games, as six of our goals came on 6-on-5 situations. We did a great job converting our changes."

The Broncos will return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they host Cal Poly at West Valley College in Saratoga. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
