Men's Water Polo Falls At Home to Conference Opponents

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The No. 16 men's water polo team hosted two big conference games over the weekend. The Broncos were unable to pull out wins and fell to No. 18 Loyola Marymount on Oct. 31 and No. 6 UC San Diego on Nov. 1.

The Broncos started off the game strong with two goals by Mark Davis. Will Grant and David Guibord each had one goal, and the first quarter ended 4-3, Bronco advantage.

The Lions stepped up their game in the second quarter, tying the game with a little over five minutes left. With tough defense, the Lions kept the Broncos scoreless in the second and took the 5-4 lead.

From there, the Lions took off with the game, going on a four goal run in the third quarter. John Raineri scored his first goal of the game, ending the third quarter 9-5 Lions.

Demarco Orella and Richard Daly scored in the fourth quarter, but it was too late for the Broncos. The Lions left the pool with the 10-7 conference win.

The following day, the Broncos took on the top-ranked Tritons. The Tritons kept the Broncos scoreless in the first quarter and much of the second quarter and went on a four goal unanswered run. With under a minute to play in the second quarter, Davis put in the Broncos first goal of the game.

Guibord found the back of the net for the Broncos in the third period, but the Tritons continued their lead, 5-2. After another four goal run by the Tritons, Raineri ended the third quarter with a goal, making it 9-3.

The Broncos bounced back in the fourth quarter, going on their own five goal run with goals by Graham McClone, Evan Chang, Guibord and two by Davis. The Tritons closed out the game with the 11-8 win.

The Broncos will now travel south on Nov. 8 and take on Fresno Pacific before finishing up season with a final three game stretch at home.
