No. 16 Men’s Water Polo Tops Cal Baptist; Hosts the Rodeo This Weekend

Rodeo Tournament Scoreboard/Results

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Entering a homestand after playing its last 13 on the road, the Santa Clara men’s water polo team rallied to edge Cal Baptist, 9-8, Thursday night at Sullivan Aquatic Center, snapping the Lancers three-game winning streak.

Santa Clara (6-14) held the lead for less than a minute in the first quarter, and trailed by as much as four in the second quarter. With the game tied entering the fourth, the Lancers (12-9) struck first to take an 8-7 lead. The two teams fought back and forth until Santa Clara's Owen Asalone found the back of the net to tie the game. A minute later, DeMarco Orella scored the eventual game-winning goal off a cross pass and SCU was able to hold off Cal Baptist to walk away with the victory.

“It’s great to get a good win like that going into [the Rodeo], especially a conference win,” said head coach Keith Wilbur. “We played from behind the whole game until Orella gave us the lead. Joe Maestri had a great game and our defense looked strong.

“This weekend I want to see great defense and patient offense,” Wilbur commented on his expectations for the weekend. “If our defense can play well in front of our goalies it will lock things down and give us opportunities on offense.”

Santa Clara will host its annual home tournament, The Rodeo, this weekend. The Broncos will face rival No. 11 Brown, No. 19 Harvard, No. 17 St. Francis (NY), and No. 14 Bucknell. The tournament will feature 10 teams and 18 total games beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
