No. 16 Men’s Water Polo Starts Rodeo with OT Win over No. 10 Brown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 16 Santa Clara men’s water polo team picked up its second win in a row with a 13-11 overtime thriller against rival No. 10 Brown.

The Broncos, playing in front of a packed Sullivan Aquatic Center, trailed by as much as three in the second quarter but were able to enter halftime tied at 6-all. A hard-fought third quarter saw the match still tied at 8-apiece entering the final period.

Santa Clara held a 10-9 lead until the last 30 seconds of the game. After a goal from Brown, Will Grant muscled his way to give the Broncos the lead with just 20 seconds on the clock, but Brown scored at the end of regulation to force overtime.

Santa Clara held Brown scoreless in the two overtime periods. Owen Asalone scored in the first overtime period, and Graham McClone provided insurance in the second overtime period to give the Broncos a 13-11 win.

McClone and John Raineri led the Broncos with three goals each. Raineri also picked up four assists and five steals. Evan Chang earned five ejections for Santa Clara.

The annual Rodeo Tournament features 10 total teams with 15 games remaining. Santa Clara will face No. 19 Harvard, No. 17 St. Francis (NY), and No. 14 Bucknell. Stay updated with the Broncos at the tournament central page.
