LMU Pulls Away From Santa Clara in WWPA Action Saturday

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 16th-ranked Santa Clara men's water polo team scored with seven seconds to play in the first half to even the game at the intermission, but homestanding and 15th-ranked LMU used an eight-goal second half to win 14-8 Saturday at the Burns Aquatics Center.

Santa Clara (9-17; 1-3 WWPA) was making a two-game conference road trip to Southern California play the Lions and No 17 UCSD. The Broncos were close in both, losing to UCSD 9-4 Thursday in a game that was also tied at the break.

"We are right there, but need to play better in the fourth quarter," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur.. "These games were important for conference seeding (for mid-November's championship tournament at Air Force), but we know we can play with anyone, just need to close games out."

The Lions won their seventh-straight to improve to 10-10 on the season and 4-1 in the WWPA. The Lions' defense held Santa Clara to just one goal in the book-end quarters, including no goals the final seven minutes of the game.

Garrat Johnson scored twice, including that equalizing goal going into halfitme. Owen Asalone led the Broncos' attack with three and senior goalkeeper Joe Maestri had 10 saves.

Santa Clara will return home to play twice next weekend, hosting WWPA games against Fresno Pacific (Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m.) and vs. Air Force (Sunday, Nov. 8 at 12 noon).
