Men’s Water Polo Edged by Cal Baptist in Preliminary Round of WWPA Championship

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's team, which is playing host to the three-day Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship, was edged in Friday's preliminary round, falling to Cal Baptist, 10-8, in the last of three games.

Brent Teraoka, the conference's leading scorer, potted a game-high three goals, including the game-winner and an insurance tally, for the fourth-seeded Lancers (22-9) who moved into Saturday's semifinals where they will face top-seeded UC Davis (21-5) at 11:15 a.m.

Mac Carey led the offensive attack for the Broncos (11-15) with two goals and one assist. DeMarco Orella and Ryan Werner each had one goal and two assists.

Teraoka's second goal with 41 seconds left in the third quarter increased the Cal Baptist lead to 9-6, but the Broncos battled back to within one.

Garrat Johnson scored with 24 seconds left in the third quarter and Graham McClone, the team's leading scorer, tallied his lone goal on a penalty shot with 6:12 remaining in the game, cutting the deficit to 9-8.

While the Broncos were unable to capitalize on a pair of ejections in the final four minutes, Teraoka added his insurance marker off a feed from Elad Gunya with 2:28 remaining.

Santa Clara out-shot Cal Baptist 41-27, but misfired on its final seven attempts with goalie Joseph Moorman saving four of the last five. He had 12 saves in the game.

The Broncos went 2-for-11 with the man advantage while the Lancers were 1 of 5.

"We're disappointed about losing the game," Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "We played that team three weeks ago and were down 8-0 at the half so I think the guys played really hard. We made some big improvements. It's tough to lose a close game, but I respect how hard they played. We're a young team in a lot of ways."

No. 2 seed UC San Diego (14-7) will meet third-seeded No. 3 Loyola Marymount (12-15) in Saturday's second semifinal, which starts at 1 p.m.

UC Davis received a bye through Friday's preliminary round in the seven-team field. In the opening game, UC San Diego defeated seventh-seeded Fresno Pacific, 17-10, and game two saw LMU edge sixth-seeded Air Force, 9-8.

Air Force (9-16) and Fresno Pacific (9-19) will face off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in a consolation game. The winner meets the Broncos at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the fifth-place contest.
