Broncos Finish Fourth At WWPA Championship

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Santa Clara men's water polo's time at the Western Water Polo Association Championships came to end on Sunday with the fourth-seeded Broncos falling to host and No. 2 seed LMU, 14-6, in the third-place game. The Broncos finished in fourth place at the Championships and conclude the season with a 12-14 overall record and a 4-4 mark in league play.

Chase Raisin was named to the All-Tournament First Team and Zach Fales earned a spot on the second team.

The Broncos struck first with Ford Eldredge taking the honors for his first of two goals on the day, but LMU (17-9) scored the next four goals to build a three-score advantage. Matt Peterson responded by taking advantage of a power play to tighten the gap, but LMU struck for another goal to make it a 5-2 affair at the end of the first period.

Santa Clara came out firing to open the second period with Chase Raisin and Zach Fales each finding the back of the cage to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. Once again, however, LMU had a response as they rattled off three-straight goals to break the game open at 8-4 at halftime.

The third quarter saw great defensive play on both sides with each team only allowing one goal for the period, but the fourth quarter belonged to the Lions. LMU outscored the Broncos 4-1 in the final period as they cruised to their 17th victory of the season.

Eldredge and Raisin finished with two goals each to lead the offensive attack. Chase Zamborelli and Wyatt Stenson both saw time in the cage and combined for 13 blocks.

No. 1 seed UC Davis brought home the championship title by holding off three-seed UC San Diego in overtime, 13-12. The Aggies' Tyler Mrkaich was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
