Women's Basketball Drops First Game of Season

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cold shooting was too much to overcome as Santa Clara women's basketball lost for the first time this season, 66-50, at Long Beach State Sunday.

The Broncos (3-1) shot just 29.5-percent from the field, including 16.0-percent in the second half. The team also struggled from deep, going 4-of-17. They managed to stay in the game until the fourth quarter thanks to going 20-of-26 from the charity stripe while allowing just eight attempts.

The 49ers (4-0) had a much better day on offense, shooting 48.2-percent from the floor and went 8-of-14 from beyond the arc.

Another deciding factor in the game was turnovers. Santa Clara committed a season-worst 26 which turned into 27 points for Long Beach State. The Broncos were only able to force 13 and turn them into 13 points.

The Broncos did manage to hold a 41-23 advantage on the boards, including 16-6 on the offensive glass, but had just a 7-0 edge in second chance points.

Santa Clara was hanging around until a nightmarish fourth quarter. The 49ers scored the first 11 points of the quarter. The Broncos didn't get their first points of the quarter until a jumper by Shayley Harris at the 2:24 mark and managed just four in the period.
