Women's Basketball Beats Pepperdine on the Road

MALIBU, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball went on the road and completed a season sweep of Pepperdine with a 63-54 win on Thursday night.

A 13-0 run late in the first quarter put the Broncos (13-11, 7-7 WCC) on top for good and Lindsey VanAllen moved into 10th on the program's all-time scoring list with a game-high 22 points.

VanAllen's 22 points puts her at 1,228 for her career. She finished the night with six rebounds and four triples while going 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Lara Edmanson was 6-of-7 from the floor for 14 points and Merle Wiehl just missed a double-double with nine points and career-high 16 rebounds.

The first quarter was back-and-forth for the first few minutes until an Edmanson layup at 6:31 started the Santa Clara run that featured points form six different players and made the score 23-12.

The Waves (7-13, 3-8 WCC) were able to get within five late in the game thanks to a 15-6 run that saw Malia Bambrick and Cheyenne Givens hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it a 59-54 game with 35 seconds to go. It wasn't enough as VanAllen converted four in a row from the free throw line to close things out.

It was Ally Stedman that led the team in scoring at 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting with Becky Obinma also in double-figures at 10. Givens finished with eight and Bambrick scored five.

Neither team shot particularly well with the Broncos at 39.0-percent and the Waves at 37.5-percent. Santa Clara moved the ball better, collecting 17 assists on 23 made baskets while Pepperdine had 11 dimes and 24 made baskets.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 43-41 all-time against Pepperdine.
  • Lindsey VanAllen is now at 1,228 career points, good for 10th all-time at Santa Clara. Next is Suzanne Ressa (1992-96) with 1,262.
  • The Broncos were without Lexie Pritchard who was injured at Long Beach State. Her return is uncertain. Ashlee Maldonado is also out and will miss the entire season.
