Beach Volleyball Splits at Big West Coast Classic

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The Santa Clara University beach volleyball team earned a split in its two matches at the Big West Coast Classic on Saturday, defeating Sacramento State, 3-2, before falling to UC Davis, 4-1, at Main Beach.

vs. SACRAMENTO STATE

The Hornets (2-2) won each of the top two pairs, but it was the Broncos (2-2) who took Nos. 3 through 5 to win the match, 3-2. And they did it with three sweeps.

Casey Campbell and Ella Duffner swept Sacramento State's Ashlynn Archer and Ellie Tisko, 2-0, at the No. 3 spot. They took a dominant first-set win at 21-10, then came back with a 21-18 triumph in set two. Alexie Epstein and Alexia Gallegos teamed at No. 4 pairs to sweep the Hornets' Carrie Crom and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin, 21-14 and 21-18.

Claire Doud and Caroline Kedeshian were the most dominant at the No. 5 spots. They swept the Sacramento State duo of Caty Cordano and Hailey Plugge, 21-12 and 21-11, in a match that took just over 30 minutes.

vs. UC DAVIS

Julia Sangiacomo and Nicole Robison earned a three-set victory against the Aggies (7-0) at the No. 1 pairs spot. They downed the duo of Tabitha Mitchell and Finley Rollins by first winning a close first set, 21-17, then winning an even closer third set in extra points, 17-15.

UC Davis won pairs No. 2 through 4 with sweeps. Epstein and Gallegos gave Alicia Letvin and Sydney Ram-Kim a run at the No. 5 spot, pushing them to three sets. Epstein and Gallegos won the opening set, 21-17, and narrowly fell in the third and deciding frame, 15-12.

COMING UP

The Broncos travel south on Wednesday to Cal Poly for two matches against Utah and the host Mustangs. They then return to the South Bay and go across town on Saturday for three matches against local junior colleges at West Valley College.
