by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

MILLBRAE, Calif. - Santa Clara women's golf had a phenomenal opening day at the Silicon Valley Showcase presented by SK Hynix fighting back after the first round to put themselves in third place. Over the first two rounds they were only outplayed by the two ranked teams in the field, Stanford and Pepperdine.

Borina Sutikto and Lauren Shew led the team today in scoring as they both ended up at 7-over after the first two rounds and are in the T13th position. Sutikto, coming off a T5 finish at last week's Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, opened with a 3-over 74 and followed it up with a 4-over 75. Shew started her day off with a 5-over 76 then continued to shoot the best round of any Bronco today with a 2-over 73.

Another pair of Broncos that are sitting in the same position are Claire Choi and Inara Sharma in T21 at 10-over. Choi shot a Round 1 score of 6-over 77 as she went even on the back nine after going 6-over through the first nine, then followed it up with a 4-over 75 which included an eagle 3 on No. 2. Sharma opened with a 7-over 78 but rallied back to shoot a 3-over 74 in Round 2 which included four birdies.

Not far behind the pair of Choi and Sharma is Audrey Brust who shot back-to-back 6-over 77s to put herself in a tie for 26th. Her first round was able to be counted towards the team total and was 1-over through the first 16 holes of her second round. Playing as an individual this week, Brianna Park opened with an 8-over 79 with a birdie on her card and followed her first round up with an 11-over 82 which included two birdies.

Santa Clara had the most movement of any team in the rankings from Round 1 to Round 2 as they climbed five spots after improving their cumulative score by seven shots to be at 33-over overall. No. 1-ranked Stanford leads the team race as they are 2-over after the two rounds. Stanford's Sadie Englemann and Pepperdine's Kaleiya Romero lead the individual race at 3-under overall. Play of the Final Round will begin at 8:30 a.m. PT tomorrow.
